Between the Propylaeum on the Ville Royale tell and the other palace constructions at the same level on the Apadana tell, a valley over 10 m deep in the middle and approximately 30 m long had to be crossed. A bridge was created between these two mounds, a huge mud-brick and chamber construction. It was founded over 15 m beneath the palace floors. To the east this causeway-bridge was supported by the rectified slope of the Ville Royale tell and to the west by the very solid retaining wall of the Apadana terrace, on an almost vertical embankment. It is not known what type of surface enabled transit on this causeway.
