When Cyrus the Great rose to power c. 550 BC, the Middle East was divided among four major powers: Media (Ecbatana), the neo-Babylonian kingdom (Babylon), the Lydian kingdom (Sardis) and the Pharaonic kingdom (Memphis).
In the space of two decades, Cyrus beat the Median, Lydian and Babylonian armies. The masters of Ectabana, Sardis and Babylon had to bow to his authority and relinquish their kingdoms to Persian control.
As a dazzling symbol and illustration of his new power, Cyrus built palaces and a fortress in the heart of Persia, at Pasargadae. On his death, it became his final resting place, in a tomb built specially for him.
