TRADUCTION
Nabû-mukīn-zēri/Aplā/Rē’i-alpi has voluntarily sealed and given to Nabû-šumu-ukīn/Mušēzib-Marduk/Rē’i-alpi forever:
– 10 days in month I: from the 13th until the 22nd
– 10 days in II: from the 15th until the 25th (sic)
– 10 days in IV: from the 11th until the 20th
– 10 days in V: from the 9th until the 18th
– 10 days in VII: from 13th until the 22nd
– 5 days in X: from the 21st until the 27th (sic)
– 5 days in XI: 09, 10, 11, 12, 17
in total 60 days of the oxherd prebend in Ezida, temple of Nabû – except of the 7 days that are the (undivided) share of Nabû-šumu-ukīn and Nabû-mukīn-zēri.
(11) Nabû-mukīn-zēri/Aplā/Rē’i-alpi has voluntarily sealed and given to Nabû-šumu-ukīn/Mušēzib-Marduk/Rē’i-alpi forever: four months of the cows (i.e. cowherd prebend), including four sacrificial oxen (alpu ginû) and pappasu, (and) daily 3 qû bread, 3 qû good quality beer and malītu-bowls of flour-offerings before the Lords. (15) Nabû-šumu-ukīn assumes responsibility for performing the service, feeding the cows, not-interrupting (the service) and for guarding. (16) Nabû-mukīn-zēri shall enjoy the pappasu of the days (of the oxherd prebend) and of the cows’ prebend of the months (as said), the bread, and the beer for as long as he lives.
(18) Nabû-mukīn-zēri/Aplā/Rē’i-alpi has voluntarily sealed and given to Nabû-šumu-ukīn/Mušēzib-Marduk/Rē’i-alpi forever: half a sheep on 28/XI before Nanāya of Ehuršaba in Babylon, common property of Nabû-mukīn-zēri and Nabû-šumu-ukīn. (21) From now until the end of days these prebends will belong to Nabû-šumu-ukīn. (22) Each (party) has taken one (copy of this tablet).

REMARQUES
On the same day a second tablet was drafted (BE 8 106 no. 180) recording additional arrangements between Nabû-mukīn-zēri and Nabû-šumu-ukīn. This text reveals that Nabû-šumu-ukīn presented a ‘gift’ of 6 m of silver to Nabû-mukīn-zēri in exchange for all the prebends listed in BM 28872, and that he promised to give Nabû-mukīn-zēri 6 kurru of barley and 0;1.4 sesame a year, as well as 5 cuts of meat every month, for as long as he would live. In return, Nabû-šumu-ukīn was allowed to make use of the latter’s slave for the herding of the cattle, providing that he would supply the slave’s food and clothing himself. BE 8 106 no. 180 and BM28872 are good examples of the practice of dissociating the legal transfer of the prebend from the accompanying payment in silver or kind (see §2.5). About two years after BM 28872 and BE 8 106 no. 180 the entire transfer was cancelled in favor of Nabû-mukīn-zēri’s son Rēmūt-Nabû. See IV.1.1, dossier 12 for further details about this affair. (12) The enumeration may be understood in such a way that the consumables constituted the pappasu of the cow’s prebend. This is however unlikely, as it would make BM 28872 the only text that uses the word pappasu to describe the consumable part of the income of the oxherds. Their pappasu usually consisted of silver; the consumables were known as panāt ūmi. The income of bread and beer should therefore be separated from the pappasu of the cow’s prebend. This fits with BM 26484 (edited by Zadok 2003b) where the income of bread and beer before the Lords is mentioned as a separate post.
