REMARQUES

BM 28920 offers a rare testimony of the performance of a butcher’s prebend, but the text is difficult to understand because of damages. It would seem that two different contract types were combined in BM 28920: ‘lease’ and ‘work contract.’ The first part of BM 28920 (ll.1'-10') falls in the category of the prebend lease: Marduk-nāṣir assigns the usufruct of his prebend’s yield to Nabû-ahu-ittannu against a fixed sum (1 m 35 š of silver together with an unknown commodity, and 5 minas of wool). As explained by M. Jursa (1999: 44), such contracts do not usually include arrangements about the performance of the cultic tasks attached to the prebend. This is nevertheless clearly the case in BM 28920 (ll.15'-6'), which stipulates that Nabû-ahu-ittannu would be responsible for preparing the meal (i.e. the butcher’s contribution to the sacrifices) and for “standing guard,” a general description of performing temple service.
