TRADUCTION
(Concerning) 5 5/6 m stamped silver of 1/8 alloy, capital amount of Marduk-rēmanni/Bēl-uballiṭ/Ṣāhit-ginê due from Nergal-šumu-iddin/Iqīša/Ṣāhit-ginê: (5) the account has been made and Lūṣi-ana-nūri/Šumu-ukīn/Šangû-Ištar-Bābili has paid on behalf of Nergal-šumu-iddin 7 m 1/3 2 š silver, including interest, to Marduk-rēmanni, the creditor of Nergal-šumu-iddin and for this he (Marduk-rēmanni) will buy fNanāya-šumahūa, his (Nergal-šumu-iddins) slave woman. (12) After Lūṣi-ana-nūri took the debt note from Marduk-rēmanni he gave it to Nergal-šumu-iddin. (15) Nergal-šumu-iddin has been paid the 8 minas of silver, the price of his slave woman, by Lūṣi-ana-nūri. (16) Witnesses: Šamaš-iddin/Bēl-aplu-iddin/Šangû-Šamaš, Ahhē-iddin-Marduk/Marduk-erība/Isinnāya, Mušēzib-Marduk/Marduk-iddin/Malāhu?, Nidinti-Bēl/Nabû-nādin-šumi/[FN]. REMARQUES
The transaction recorded in this text is complex. A large sum of silver (consisting of a capital amount of 350 š and 92 š interest), owed to Marduk-rēmanni by his uncle Nergal-šumu-iddin, is being paid” by Lūṣi-ana-nūri (l. 1-10). But instead of accepting payment in silver, Marduk-rēmanni purchases Nergal-šumu-iddins slave woman fNanāya-šumahūa through Lūṣi-ana-nūri as middleman: the latter pays” Nergal-šumu-iddin 8 minas of silver for this slave woman, and sells” her for 7 m 22 š to Marduk-rēmanni. In this way, Lūṣi-ana-nūri contributes the humble sum of 38 š silver to a large financial transaction between uncle and nephew, in which the expensive slave sale is a legal fiction.
What could have been the purpose of this complex set-up? A possible answer to this question can be found in MR 159 (Dar 31; 491 BC) where the slave woman fNanāya-šumahūa is said to be the property of fInbā, Lūṣi-ana-nūris daughter and (then) widow of Marduk-rēmanni. Apparently, fNanāya-šumahūa was meant to serve as fInbā’s dowry slave. The transaction in MR 50 (Dar 06; 516 BC) can thus be explained as a (partly) fictional dowry payment by Lūṣi-ana-nūri: he presents his son-in-law with a slave woman for whom he paid only 38 š of silver but to whose purchase Marduk-rēmanni contributed 7 m 22 š of silver. This comes down to a gift of nearly 6 2/3 m silver by Marduk-rēmanni to his father-in-law, a situation that inverses the traditional power relations underlying marriage practice in Babylonia, where the family of the bride assumed financial responsibility for the dowry.
The debt relationship” between Marduk-rēmanni and his uncle Nergal-šumu-iddin probably originated in their commercial activities (cf. MR 24 and Chapter 7, firm [6]). Marduk-rēmanni gave up the proceedings of their business venture in order to help his father-in-law finance his daughters dowry. The political background that resulted in the degradation of Lūṣi-ana-nūris family is discussed in Chapter 5.
