TRADUCTION
(Concerning) the cows that they have been branding in [(+GN?)] but (for which) they paid no gifts, and Nabû-mukīn-zēri/Aplā/Rē’i-alpi made them stand in the storeroom of the king of Babylon on the orders of Nabû-uballiṭ, šatammu of Ezida. Nabû-mukīn-zēri must register the silver of these gift of the oxherds for the šatammu, the mubannû and the “person of the bīt-šutummi” with Nabû-uballiṭ, šatammu of Ezida, and give (proof of it) to Nabû-ahhē-iddin of the Ilia family. (13) Witnesses: Itti-Šamaš-balāṭu/Zēr-Bābili/Nappāhu, Gimil-Nabû/Šulā/Ilūtu-bani, Nabû-ittannu/ Haddā/Ibnāya. (16) [PN]/Zēr-Bābili[/FN]. Borsippa, Dar [x]-III-12.
REMARQUES
This tablet poses problems; it contains a number of spelling mistakes (ll.1, 4, 7, 11) and the composition is inaccurate (the first two verbs have no subject). The purpose of the text is to record that Nabû-mukīn-zēri has to pay “gifts” in silver on behalf of the oxherds. The gifts were meant as fees of certain professionals (the šatammu, the “arrangers of the sacrificial table,” and the person guarding the šutummu of the king). According to ll.1-3 the gifts were payable on account of the cows that had been branded, presumably by the oxherds. The branding might have taken place in an outside location (l.1?; cf. BM 94789 no. 169) but at a later point the animals are said to have been transferred to the storeroom of the king.
NOTES
(1)         The reading of this line is very tentative. The sign érin is presumably erroneous; “workmen” does not make sense in this context. The second half of the line might have mentioned the place where the animals were branded.
(4)         lugal ká il-lu-ú: a hearing mistake for šar bābili?
(11, 7)  ú-šá-az-za-ma: the same defective spelling of the verb ušazzazma is found in Abraham 2004 no. 2: 7. The verb in line 7 ul-te-zu-šú-nu-tú is probably a similar defective form of the same verb, though ul-te-ṣi-šú-nu-tú (Š aṣû) would be a possible reading given that the central sign is damaged. The latter verb should however be combined with the preposition ultu instead of ina in line 3 and I therefore opt for the former reading.
(11)       This is probably Nabû-ahhē-iddin/Nabû-zēru-ušebši/Ilia who appears about ten times as witness and scribe in the Oxherd archive (e.g., VS 4 100 and BE 8 106). At one occasion he is mentioned as creditor of nearly 3 m of silver due from Nabû-mukīn-zēri’s son Rēmūt-Nabû (BM 102254 Dar 09). The text does not specify the background of this debt but it is not impossible that a connection have to be sought with the present affair.
