The first exemplar of an inscription of Xerxes (XSa) known to be from Susa, engraved on a bell-shaped column base. The column base was found on the Acropole mound during the excavations led by Jacques de Morgan in 1897-1898, not far from its highest point. The lower diameter is only 0.5 m, i.e., much smaller than that of the Apadana columns. The text mentions a palace (hadiš in Old Persian) built by Xerxes’s father, Darius I. If it was not displaced in ancient times, the base would belong to a minor Achaemenid building on the Acropole, suggesting that hadiš was a general term, not an exclusive reference to the Palace of Darius.
