MTA–ELTE Lendület Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian Cylinder Seals and Divine World (2020–2025)
In the framework of the five-year project granted by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences to Zoltán Niederreiter (Eötvös Loránd University Budapest), we intend to collect the cylinder seals dated to the first millennium BCE. The material of the Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian periods (circa 1000–500 BCE) of our project is planned to be made accessible to the public on the project’s own website (https://divine-world-glyptics.com) by end of 2023. As a part of our project, based on an agreement with Damien Agut-Labordère, we also collect the cylinder seals from the Achaemenid period. As a result of this research, we present 500 objects in the first phase, and we intend to make all the collected Achaemenid cylinder seals available to the public by the end of the second phase in 2025. The classification of these objects was done correspondingly to the system used to present the object types on Achemenet. The transcription and translation of the seal legends of the inscribed cylinder seals will be completed in the second phase.
The presented Achaemenid material was collected and organised by Z. Niederreiter. The data on these cylinder seals were introduced into the database by the members of the project: Gábor Zoltán Erdős (GZE), Huba Lőrincz (HL), Erika Roboz (ER), and Gábor Winkler Nemes (GWN). We owe our gratitude to Bruno Gombert who helped us with the technical aspects concerning the Open Melodie platform used by the Achemenet website. The implementation of the present project is connected to the French-Austrian ANR/FWF project “Material Culture of Babylonia during the 1st millennium BC” (2019–2022) of which Z. Niederreiter is a current member. He also received funding from the DEA programme of the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme which allowed him to conduct research on the above-mentioned Achaemenid material in Nanterre – Paris in September 2020 and 2022.
In addition to the collection of Achaemenid cylinder seals on this website, our goal is to classify these objects and analyse their iconographic characteristics. We plan to publish the results in a monographic publication of the Persika series in 2025.
