View of the Hypostyle Hall from the northeast corner. In the background, to the left, the “château” of the French mission (1898) and to the right the dome of “Daniels tomb” from medieval times. The square column bases are in a poor state and decades of exposure to air has worsened the state of the remains carved in grey limestone, which is highly sensitive to frost. Not one of the 36 square bases is complete. Several have vanished, others can only be identified by the stone blocks that supported them as foundations. A few attempts to reconstruct them have produced the shape and full profile of these bases with two steps, surmounted by a torus. They measure 2.45 m on each side (2.35 m at the Apadana in Persepolis) and approximately 1.24 m high for the two steps together, like in Persepolis. The tori have rarely been preserved. The floor, which was no doubt tiled with baked bricks, has completely disappeared.
