TRADUCTION
Ezida-šumu-ukīn/Bēl-uballiṭ/Ilšu-abūšu voluntarily promised in a sealed tablet that he would give (the following) as dowry to his daughter fIlat and Qīšti-Marduk/Nabû-kīn-zēri/ Siātu, the husband of fIlat: the di’û (a type of offering), the guqqû (sheep from the irregular offering), the hide(s), and the leather straps: the income (panātu) of 2 days of the butcher’s prebend in Ezida, temple of Nabû, 1 day on 08/IV, ½ day on 28/VIII, ½ day on 28/[X] (as well as) fNanāya-sah?-inni and her son Itti-Nabû-gūzu; in total: 2 days of the butcher’s prebend and 2 slaves. (9)The di’û, guqqû, hide(s) and leather straps, the income of 2 days of the butcher’s prebend – 1 day on 08/IV, ½ day on 28/VIII, ½ day on 28/[X]: Ezida-šumu-ukīn has assigned (this) under seal to his daughter fIlat and Qīšti-Marduk, the husband of fIlat. (15) They are allowed to dispose of the 2 days butcher’s prebend, including the di’û, guqqû, hide(s), and leather straps, that Ezida-šumu-ukīn assigned under seal to his daughter fIlat and his son-in-law Qīšti-Marduk. (20) Ezida-šumu-ukīn and his wife fBanītu-innin witnessed this (decision). (22) May Nabû and Marduk ordain the ruin of the person who tries to change this affair. (24) Witnesses: Kudurru/[PN/FN], Mušēzib-Bēl/Rēmūt-Gula/Ahūtu, Nabû-mukīn-apli/Nergal-uballiṭ/Šigûa. (27) And scribe: Marduk-ēreš/Šamaš-šumu-ukīn/Siāti. (28) Borsippa, Nbn 14-[x]-07.
REMARQUES
This tablet is part of a retro-dossier pertaining to VS 5 28. It is discussed more fully in my edition of BM 28950 no. 110. Although BM 28865 appears to be a dowry text at first glance, it is the granting of the right of free disposition of the prebend that constitutes the real subject of BM 28865. The dowry promise and its transfer occurred at some point in the past. The purpose of BM 28865 is to record the right of fIlat and her husband to alienate the prebend according to their wishes and to record that fIlat’s parents consented with this right. Approximately one year later fIlat and her husband did make use of this right, selling the prebend to the head of the Ibnāya A family (VS 5 28). At this occasion BM 28865 was handed over to the new owner, along with two more tablets that document an earlier phase of the ownership history of the prebend, BM 28950 no. 110 and BM 29411 no. 111. See Zadok 2009: 175 for a summary of BM 28865.
